Crissy
Field -- Managed by the Golden Gate National Recreation Association
(GGNRA), this is an off-leash area that was once an important airfield
for small planes and helicopters. Take Mason Street west past the old
warehouses and turn right on Mitchell Street. Walk through the dirt
parking lot to the off-leash area on the beach, east of Ft. Point. Keep
your dog out of the fenced restoration area or risk being cited by NPS
rangers! Dogs can swim in the Bay and run free on the sandy beach.
Fort
Mason -- GGNRA-managed, on-leash area near the intersection of Bay
& Laguna Streets. The best feature stands in the middle of the park
-- a fire hydrant!! An added feature is a drinking fountain just for
dogs!
Fort
Point -- Another GGNRA-managed, on-leash spot. Follow the signs
from Lincoln Avenue as you approach the Golden Gate Bridge. Not much
grass, but lots of NPS rangers!! And you can watch some world-class
surfers do their stuff under the Golden Gate Bridge.
Presidio
of San Francisco -- This is also a GGNRA-managed spot. Enter at
Arguello Boulevard near the Bridge approach. Lush forests and great
hiking, but most of the area is "on leash" so watch out.
Allyne
Park -- Located on the corner of Green & Gough Streets, this is
a multi-use area so be considerate of other park users and keep your
dog on-leash.
Alta
Plaza Park -- Bounded by Jackson, Clay, Steiner & Scott Streets,
this park has an official off-leash area in the 2nd terrace on the south
side. Lots of dog owners know about this area so be prepared to see
quite a few. The owners answer to their dog's names so get acquainted
early!
Lafayette
Park -- On Sacramento Street between Octavia & Gough is a 4-square
block area with a lot of off-leash dog traffic. Beware of the steep
slope that leads down to heavy traffic on Sacramento Street.
Marina
Green -- Famous neighborhood gathering spot for sunbathers, bicyclists,
joggers, in-line skaters, you name it!! Lots of people around so be
considerate. Keep your dog on-leash.
Moscone
Park -- Chestnut & Buchanan. Large recreational area but dogs
are welcome too. Popular with the local marina crowd. Dogs are allowed
off-leash, but not allowed to drink out of the water fountain.
