In October of 1992, I was living off the kindness of strangers
in Austin, Texas. I had lived with someone before who either lost me
or dumped me with no identification. One day when I was running around
near a highway my mom (well, she wasn't my mom yet) came by and rescued
me. I was all wet and stinky from swimming in a big fountain at a nearby
office building, but she took me anyway. She took me home, gave me doggy
treats and a bed of my own and decided to keep me. (Actually, I decided
to keep her, but I let her think it was her decision!)
I liked living in Austin near my cousins (two dogs named
Jake & Ellie) but I like San Francisco even more. I live in Noe Valley,
and my mom and I have found quite a few places that let me shop, too.
Our regular weekend rounds take us to 24th Street, where we buy flowers
at Accent on Flowers (they always give me treats there), books at Cover
to Cover Booksellers (treats come my way there, too), and gift type
stuff at Just for Fun. I also help my mom pick out movies at Noe Valley
Video. And even when we're not shopping, we stop by the Animal Company
where the guy behind the counter always has a treat for the passing
pooches. I'm a Lab, after all -- I'm all about snacks.
I take at least two walks a day, more on the weekends.
Fort Funston is, of course, my favorite place in the city. Before I
moved to San Francisco I had never even seen the ocean! When I jumped
out of the car the first time at the beach, I was amazed. My first reaction
was: "You knew about this! And you didn't tell me until NOW??!!" I also
like Golden Gate Park on Sundays when I'm allowed off the leash.
So, that's my San Francisco story. At least, that's what's
happened so far.> Since I drag my mom and her friends to different parts
of the city every weekend, I'm sure we'll find even more places that
let me shop or have a snack with my people.
